Dr. Derick Mendonca is a British Board certified Plastic Surgeon, currently Head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department at Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore.
After his undergraduate training (MBBS) at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) Bellary, Dr. Derick completed his Specialist Registrar Plastic Surgery training at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham, United Kingdom. He obtained the MRCS and FRCS (Plastic) qualification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, and is credentialed with the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Plastic Surgery. He did a National Interface fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery at Leicester, England where he worked at the BUPA and Nuffield private hospitals network. Dr. Derick obtained an advanced fellowship in Craniofacial and Paediatric Plastic Surgery for 1 year at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, USA, one of America’s top three academic medical centres, whose hospitals (St. Louis Children’s and Barnes Jewish Hospital) are consistently ranked as one of America’s best hospitals.
During his training in Birmingham, Dr. Derick was part of the team of Military Plastic Surgeons caring for injured British soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq. Complex reconstruction was undertaken at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Birmingham. He also, did a Master of Science (MSc) research degree in Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration, Cardiff University. Dr. Derick obtained two international travelling fellowships from the Ethicon foundation and the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow which took him to Uganda, East Africa and a Leprosy hospital in Pokhara, Nepal for 4 months. Recently, Dr. Derick was based at Bangalore Baptist Hospital, where he spent 18 months in establishing a comprehensive Plastic Surgery service for patients with low income and a Reconstructive Surgery fund for Bangalore rural district.
Dr. Derick maintains a keen academic interest with over 30 scientific publications, prizes and is a frequent speaker at national and international Plastic Surgery conferences. He is particularly proud of two seminal publications: The Birmingham classification of venous malformations in children, and the first biomechanical cadaveric anatomical study on palatal dissection and movement. He is a reviewer and member of the Cochrane Wounds Group, Oxford and a Craniofacial surgery reviewer for two prestigious Plastic Surgery journals. Dr. Mendonca is an active member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPRAS), British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA), Indian Society for Clefts and Craniofacial Anomalies (IndoCleft) and a full member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow (RCPSG).
His area of specialist interest is in complex Craniomaxillofacial reconstruction, Craniofacial distraction, Craniosynostosis (Endoscopic & Open Calvarial remodeling), Facial fractures and trauma, Cleft lip and palate surgery, Paediatric Plastic surgery, Ear and Nose reconstruction, Facial Palsy Reanimation surgery and Oculo-plastic surgery.
Dr. Derick offers special expertise in Cosmetic Surgery, including Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Brow lift, Blepharoplasty, Liposuction, Breast Augmentation/ Reduction surgery and Body contouring.
